Carpentry and Glazing

Most historic buildings illustrate, in varying degrees, the materials and technology, craftsmanship and architectural taste of the time from which they date. None more so than the timber and glazing used in windows, as these are often the first part of the building you notice.

Timber windows and building frames are sometimes dismissed as a liability. However they can prove remarkably durable, as shown by the survival of numerous examples that are centuries old.

When problems do occur, they are frequently down to lack of maintenance or unsuitable alterations. Decay from beetle or fungal attack due to wet and dampness are common, particularly on south-west facing walls or where cement rendering has been used rather than lime-based render.

Stone Edge Conservation offers full repairs to building timbers, frames and glazing units based around the sound conservation philosophy of maximum retention of the original with minimal intervention.
