Windmill Theatre, London
In December 2016, Stone Edge Conservation finished works at the famous Windmill Theatre, just off Shaftsbury Avenue in Soho, London. Over a period of 24 weeks, the project saw us undertake faience repairs and replacement, roof coating and structural steel repairs. We also overhauled the windows and carried out redecoration at the iconic building in the heart of theatre land.
The theatre has enjoyed an interesting history, rising to greatness in the 1930’s and 40’s when it was bought by Laura Henderson, renamed ‘The Windmill’ and showed continuous ‘variety’ shows even throughout the war years and the London blitz. The recent film ‘Mrs Henderson presents’ staring Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins depicted this era to critical acclaim. In the post war years, many famous comedians began their careers at the Windmill including Tommy Copper, Bruce Forsyth, Peter Sellers and Tony Hancock to name a few.
