Brighton Museum and Art Gallery

Brighton Museum is a distinguished Grade II* listed building nestled within the Valley Gardens Conservation Area of Brighton and Hove. Situated in the scenic surroundings of the Grade I listed Brighton Pavilion and the Registered Pavilion Gardens, the museum is a testament to architectural grandeur and cultural heritage.

Designed in a striking Indo-Saracenic and Gothic style, the museum seamlessly integrates Hindu, Gothic, Mughal, and Chinese elements, creating a visually captivating experience. Its façade showcases Flemish-bond brickwork complemented by elegant sandstone and stucco detailing. The north elevation facing Church Street features a single-storey design, characterized by six Indo-Gothic arched bays set within scalloped recesses, framed by prominent full-height octagonal pilasters.

As part of essential conservation efforts, SECL are undertaking vital restoration work, including:

  • Replacement of the external roof lantern and slate coverings to preserve its architectural integrity.
  • Enhancements to thermal performance, ensuring energy efficiency.
  • Ancillary works, including refurbishments to leadwork, joinery, and the internal laylight, safeguarding the building’s longevity while maintaining its historical charm.

These carefully planned restorations are designed to protect and enhance the museum’s unique character, ensuring its continued role as a cultural landmark for future generations.
